Three J’can successes in collegiate events
Jamaican athletes scored three individual wins in collegiate events at the 130th staging of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field, Philadelphia, with one coming on the track and two in the field.
Leading the way was Gary Card, representing the University of Technology (UTech). Competing in the men's 100m in cold and rainy conditions, the former Wolmer's Boys' athlete clocked 10.34 seconds to edge out Joshua Onwunill of Wisconsin, 10.35s, and Louie Hinchcliffe of Houston, third in 10.40.
PERSONAL BEST
Card had qualified for the final with the fastest time after posting a personal best 10.03s in the preliminary round the previous day.
Shantae Foreman and Kai Chang scored big wins in the field in their respective events.
Foreman, the former Excelsior and St Jago High jumper, continued from where she left off indoors with victory in the women's triple jump for Clemson University. She won the event easily with a mark of 13.21 metres.
Chang gave University of the West Indies a rare win at the meet, capturing the men's discus with a distance of 59.26m.
TOP-THREE
Three other Jamaicans had top-three finishes for their institutions. Former Wolmer's Girls' high jumper Malaika Cunningham, representing the University of Villanova, was second in the women's high jump, clearing 1.70m. It was also second place for Tri-Tania Lowe of G.C. Foster College in the women's long jump, with a distance of 6.27m.
Former St Jago High sprint hurdler Briana Campbell, representing Clemson University, was third in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.80s.
Former Excelsior High sprint hurdler Sharvis Simmonds, representing Clemson University, finished second in the men's 110m hurdles after clocking 14.02. His teammate Khailan Vitalis, formerly of Kingston College, was third in 14.08s.
The University of Technology men's 4x100m team, led by a scorching second leg from Card, had a second-place finish, stopping the clock at 40.25 behind winners Ohio State, which clocked 39.56.
